reTunings, for cello and electronics, was composed for the Sonic Generator Ensemble (Atlanta, GA). The score is generated in real-time and comprises a series of pitch “cells” derived from the slow movement of Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 15 as well as fragments taken from Alfred Schnittke’s String Quartet No. 2. These materials are presented to the cellist in sequential patterns that vary from performance to performance and are interpreted in a variety of ways based on their color. The acoustic sounds of the cello are reflected, amplified and complemented in the electronically generated sounds which consist of highly processed and transformed excerpts from the above two works as well as electronically generated resonant frequencies.
